Apple Releases iPhone 2.0 as iPhone 3G Goes on Sale
Although the new second generation iPhone has been on sale for just a matter of hours or minutes (depending on what country you live in), many owners the first generation iPhone are already enjoying what many consider to be the most important new feature on the iPhone 3G. That so-called "feature" is the new iPhone operating system, OS 2.0, which has been under testing/development with approved iPhone developers for months.

Apple released the new firmware yesterday and it is available to all current iPhone owners via a fairly-typical iTunes update process. You'll need to update your iTunes to the newly released version of 7.7, but after that it's quick and easy to get your iPhone running OS 2.0. For more information, read this post on how to upgrade your iPhone to OS 2.0.
The most notable addition that iPhone firmware 2.0 brings is the iPhone AppStore, which finally allows iPhone owners to install legitimate third party applications on their iPhones -- and there are already hundreds available, many of which are free.
The new iPhone operating system doesn't stop with the addition of the AppStore, however. There is plenty more. Email support is much improved and expanded (addition of attachment handling and push support, to say the least), support for the new mobileMe service from Apple, searchable contacts, and tons more.
So, if your wallet doesn't leave you room to upgrade to the iPhone 3G, stay home, avoid the lines, and enjoy the best part of the new iPhone -- on your old iPhone.
