Yet another "iPhone killer" is now on the market. Samsung's Instinct may actually live up to that description. The Instinct was named "Best in Show" at this year's Emerging Technology Award competition at CTIA Wireless in addition to honored as the "Most Innovative Product at CTIA Wireless 2008" by the editors of LAPTOP and "Best Cell Phone" by CNET.

Sprint Samsung Instinct

The Instinct is an EV-DO Rev A device that has a virtual QWERTY keyboard like the iPhone. It also features speech activation for calling, texting, picture messaging, traffic, movie, sports, news, weather and search. Like all new phones the Instinct has built in GPS and comes with Live Search and Sprint Navigation, which provides audio and visual turn-by-turn driving directions and one-click traffic rerouting. The Instinct also supports POP3 and IMAP for corporate email. It has only a 2 megapixel camera, but it does have video capture, unlike the iPhone. It comes with a 2GB microSD card (expandable to 8GB) and, of course, has stereo Bluetooth 2.0. It also comes with two 1,000 mAh batteries that allow for around six hours of continuous talk each.

The Instinct is available today from Sprint for $129.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. It must be activated on an unlimited data plan to experience its full capabilities, according to Sprint... These plans start with the Everything Plan at $69.99/month for individuals (450 voice minutes). The Talk/Message/Data Share plans for families starting at $129.99 per month for 1500 voice minutes to share between two lines. Sprint also offers the Simply Everything Plan, which gives you both unlimited nationwide voice and data services for $99.99 per month and includes premium services - GPS navigation, email, web surfing, Sprint Music Premier and Sprint TV Premier.

On an interesting sidenote... apparently Sprint will pay you for product placement of the Instinct in any YouTube videos you make (see here and don't ask me why there are helicopters).

Sprint overcharged my small (US) company for over $50,000.00. We caught them doing it and now they refuse to refund the over-payments. You can read the full story at http://www.sprint-really-sucks.com

I also wrote an open letter to Dan Hesse the Chairman and CEO of Sprint Nextel. It is a good read so please consider reading the letter.
